About Hoops-School
About
Hoops School originated in 1997 in Deer Park, Texas, by Founder Dena Evans who was a teammate of Heidi's at the University of Virginia. When Heidi retired from the WNBA/professional basketball in 2000 after a career-ending injury, Dena gave her the “Hoops School” name and program. Heidi, who was coaching elite players at that time, noticed a lack of fundamental skills in the majority of all players, even at the top level. So, even though she continued to coach top high school scholarship prospects, she began to focus on teaching fundamentals to beginner-level players between the ages of 6 and 14. By 2006, Heidi refocused all Hoops School classes to be aimed at developing a firm foundation for elementary and middle school kids— so they could have the strategies and techniques she herself wished she had when she started basketball at age 14 (as a freshman in high school).
Today, Hoops School maintains a strong partnership with West Houston and Memorial area churches: Memorial Drive Presbyterian, Tallowood Baptist, Holy Spirit Episcopal and Memorial Drive United Methodist. She and her staff deliver Christ-centered foundational and fundamental skills of the game in a competitive but encouraging environment. Players at any skill level—beginner, intermediate, and advanced- will benefit from Coach Heidi's instruction. They are taught to "think the game" and adopt character-building traits such as sportsmanship, discipline, hard work, integrity, honor, selflessness, and grit!
Hoops School Mission: to REACH, TEACH, COACH and CHANGE LIVES of boys and girls, ages 6 to 14 years old. We inspire kids to ‘become the best they are capable of becoming’ on and off the court. Kids have fun while learning sound principles of the great game of basketball. Coach Heidi coaches with vigor and knowledge from her 30+ years as a player and coach.
